Expanding our boundaries

I have news regarding our little Dorset household! The Hubster and I are expanding beyond the boundaries of our wee little courtyard and have gained ourselves an allotment. We’ve been on the waiting list for about a year and then a month or so ago we got a message to say there was a plot available. It took a few weeks to back to the guy, but we met with the Chairman of the local allotment society last weekend and gained our allotment then and there!

It is rather larger than what we anticipated and we very quickly realised that we had a long season of digging ahead.

But we faced the challenge, went to a well-known hardware store to buy ourselves a spade, fork, rake and hoe (not going to like, there were some forced straight faces regarding any statement referring to the hoe) and then on Bank Holiday Monday we went up to our allotment to get started.

Firstly, we sectioned out our first bed and followed the advice of the Chairman and started at the spot which had previously held a bonfire.

Whilst we were digging we discovered the local wildlife were rather friendly. Mrs Blackbird regularly came over to say hello, but I think that was more to take advantage of the food potential the Hubster and I were digging up for her rather than out of politeness.

After a couple of hours we were tired out, but pleased with our progress. Half the bed had been dug over and prepared for our first crops.

I was in agony for days afterwards and realised that if I was running late for my train, I was just going to have to miss it and wait for the next time. Note to self: stretch out after digging.
